The Story
When commissioned to design feature screens for this new build, we first went back to researching and understanding more about the culture within Rwanda. It was important to incorporate what was happening, inside and connect that with Coventry University so it wasn’t lost amongst the brand. We were inspired by a number of research factors and case studies that we found interesting, one being the Kigali Area. The use of the Imigongo patterns on the building facade invited all to a place of celebrated talent and culture. This particular case study is what lead us to look into the tradition patterns found in Imigongo which is a geometric and naturally coloured art, made from natural ingredients such as clay, ash and soil.
These geometric patterns were the basis of inspiration to recreate for the screens within the hub at a much larger scale. Here, we aimed to invite the familiarity of Rwanda, keeping and respecting its culture.
The development and turn around of the Africa Hub was extremely quick to say the least, however the level of communication and work ethic across the team saw the build reach its completion target. From sketches, to technical drawings and renders, and finally the finished project, the Africa Hub is a one of many locations where Coventry University can expand it’s global presence.
