Stand Up, Stand Out

An exploration of fashion, through the lens of powerful movements that have shaped our lives. When we still live in a world where we are constantly fighting to be seen, this short fashion film directed by Ronita Temitayo, reminds of the movements that made it easier to continue the fight.

The Story

When thinking about protests, movements and speaking up, it is often faced with negative connotations or backlash. We often forget that the courage and strength to stand up and speak up about these concerns is what caused us to work towards a better world. Our world will never be perfect, but it could have been worse, and we have these movements to thank for it:

  • Working Class Movements

  • The Civil Rights Movement

  • Hair discrimination leading to the implementation of the Halo Code

  • Women Empowerment Movements

  • Youth Counter Culture Movements

Taking this job meant that I needed to believe in the message that was to be shared. The execution from me was simple enough but creating something impactful with minimal props or set was equally important. I wanted to carry the authenticity from each movement, down to the signs and props that they held - which person would hold what sign or megaphone? How would they have dressed? Yes, it was important to recognise it was a fashion film but the story telling was just as important.
