‘Portraits of Sirens Written by a Woman’ is the first zine by conceptual photographer, Alex Radota. Focusing on the strength, beauty and power of being a woman, she takes a fantastical twist on what a woman is; exploring themes such as womanhood, what it means to be a woman, and beauty standards. Telling these stories through the lens of the mythical siren and a series of images allows the viewer to take upon each character as their own.
The Story
I approached Alex Radota when seeing the brief of this project and immediately knew this was within my realm of creativity. It was something that would push me out of my comfort zone yet still excite me nonetheless. As a sole set designer without a team, working on a low budget and minimal space, it's often difficult to execute big ideas however this is exactly what I needed to push me to achieve the desired results despite my limitations.
Working closely with Alex, I was able to establish what would work best for the shoot to ensure that the costume, hair and make-up would all work together. Three looks were decided eventually which required a change of set for all of them. This meant that I had to be wise about how to dress the set well to stick within time constraints. The messier looks were left to last whereas the set slowly started building up as I introduced different elements that would accompany the clothing each time.
It was clear that the aim was to go for cooler tones and colours so that they would add to the siren look and suggest an underwater motif. This meant that lighting and props were key to showing these pops of cooler tones with the background being softer than the foreground which has a harsher pop of colour.
